Essentially, they should both hold onto the hatchet as it is placed at the bottom of the hole, and simultaneously recite the following words: *I'm sorry*... Alternatively, if you wish to invoke a mystical element... they could each articulate their intention to 'bury the hatchet' and move forward in life... this can be expressed in a prayer or any form they feel comfortable with... but fundamentally, it should be a sincere *I'm sorry* exchanged between them...

Subsequently, everyone (including witnesses) involved should lift the tree and position it into the ground over the hatchet... ensure the tree is well-watered throughout your lives... as it will symbolize the most significant and challenging act that two individuals can undertake... apologizing regardless of past events...

Once the hatchet is buried, it should ideally never be mentioned again in conversation... there is no strict rule regarding this, but they have taken steps to overcome their own egos/pride/righteousness...
